The basic difference between DDA:A and DDA:B are that the A-version is a modified Avamar client that gets installed on the test system, while the B-version is a java application requiring no install. The A-version also needs to run at least 3 days while the B-version is run-once.
The Data Assessment Workbench should be installed on the Data Collection Server.
Data Domain Collection replication duplicates the entire /data/col1 from source to a destination Data Domain. All user accounts and passwords are replicated, and the destination is a read-only copy.
An Expanded-Storage license is required for the Data Domain to expand storage beyond the Controller's max capacity. Each shelf requires a shelf capacity license as well.
Default hash cache (p_cache.dat) size is 1/16 physical RAM. If database files are 300GB, use 300MB*16=4.7GB RAM minimum.
To reduce the impact NetWorker clients on Virtual Hosts when backing up guests, create groups that spread the guest backup out over all hosts so as not to backup all VMs on a single host at a time, consider doing incrementals instead of daily full backup, and use modules for applications and databases. Also consider using client-side dedupe to limit network load.
VADP is supported in NetWorker 7.6.2, not 7.5.
Clone Controlled Replication is a feature of NetWorker when integrating with Data Domain.
To cluster a pair of Networker Servers you need Power Edition Licensing.
SnapImage is included with the Power and Network licenses of NetWorker.
Parallelism is the number of save streams a server can accept concurrently. More save streams equates to faster backup times. Parallelism should be set to the aggregate value of the target sessions on all devices in the data zone.
A single destination Data Domain system can receive backups from both CIFS clients and NFS clients as long as separate MTrees are used for each. It is a recommended best practice to not mix CIFS and NFS data in the same MTree.
Hotadd backup is not possible for virtual IDE drives - use ndb mode instead.
Networker: nsrlic -v <servername> shows licenses by type, available and which clients are using them. Nsradmin –I is for installing licenses.
When a backup expires in an Avamar/DD environment, the backup is moved to the /deleted directory and will remain there until the DD runs its clean up.
File System Assessment : Determines how much customer data could be archived, as well as the growth and breakdown of file data
Oracle 11g supports incremental backup using RMAN BCT (Block Change Tracking)
Encryption impacts Avamar storage by 33% - so subtract 65% * 2/3 = 43% before read-only threshold is hit.
